AGU SPA EPO GIFT Workshops:

Background: AGU has in the past, hosted GIFT (Geophysics Information For Teachers) Workshops at the Spring and Fall AGU meetings. Different Sections (disciplines) lead the workshops and have scientists and educators give talks and present activities to about 60 High School teachers from the local area. The Space Physics and Aeronomy (SPA) section of AGU has lead a number of these workshops at AGU meetings and at the last two IHY in Africa Workshops (Ethiopia and Zambia). We organized a day-long event on the Saturday prior to the meeting, were 60 teachers were brought to the conference hotel. Supplies for the teachers were shipped prior to the workshop. SPA science was also the centerpiece for last years EPO swing through Morocco. GIFT workshops can be conducted during future ISWI meetings.

Logistic Needs from LOC:    more...

(1) Secure Hotel Conference Room facilities for Saturday Workshop

(2) Secure funding for morning and afternoon break and lunch for teachers

(3) Invite and identify 60 local middle and high school science teachers to participate (in Ethiopia and Zambia, the Ministry of Education provided funds to support travel of teachers from outside the conference location)

(4) Help Workshop Organizers (Debbie Scherrer, Pat Reiff, and Mark Moldwin) develop Space Physics topics to be covered at workshop (i.e., what is normally presented within science classes in the hots country? What are teacher needs?)

(5) Help Workshop Organizers ship a pallet of material to conference site (customs, pick up and storage)
