[3] Iberian Summer School

This year ISWI and SCOSTEP support the first edition of the "Iberian Space Science Summer School", in collaboration with the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and University of Alcala (Spain). This summer school is an excellent opportunity to attract young scientists to learn more about the Sun-Earth system, to promote Space weather research with a particular emphasis on the Iberian Peninsula region and middle latitudes, and strengthen scientific networks.

In a virtual format, we propose a five-day summer school to be held on July 26-30, 2021. The school will cover the following topics: The Sun, Solar Wind and Interplanetary Medium, Magnetosphere, Ionosphere, Upper Atmosphere, Lower Atmosphere, and Climate Change.

The school is open to Iberian and international PhD students and young researchers, with experience in physics, with emphasis on geophysics, astrophysics space physics, or related fields.

The deadline for application is the 31st of May. For more details or information please contact Teresa Barata (teresabarata[at]dct.uc.pt).

[4] Second call: Summer School plus Conference on “Mathematics for Nonstationary Signals,and applications in Geophysics and other fields” - L'Aquila (Italy) and online, July 2021

A Summer School plus Conference on “Mathematics for NonstationarySignals and applications in Geophysics and other fields”, will take place at the Dipartimento di Scienze Umane of the Universita degli Studi dell'Aquila, L'Aquila, Italy, July 19-24, 2021.

The event will be hybrid, providing the opportunity to everyone to join either in-person or virtually.

During the Summer School young researchers and PhD students will have a chance to learn and deepen their knowledge on Mathematics of Signal Processing, in particular on new data analysis tools/techniques for non-stationary time series and their theoretical foundation.

The summer school will take place during the first 4 days and it will consist of three courses of 8 hours each.

Lecturers: - Patrick Flandrin - ENS Lyon; - Yang Wang - HKSTU; - Hau-tieng Wu - Duke University

At the end of the school there will be a 2 days and half conference during which the speakers will show both the applications of these techniques to real life data and present the current frontiers of the theoretical research.

Some slots for contributed talks are still available, as well as for posters presentation. Contributed talks will be 30 minutes long (25+5 for questions).

Submission deadline is April 30, 2021.

Applications for prospective students of the Summer School, as well as speakers of the conference are now open.

Financial support is available for a limited number of participants.

[5] UNOOSA 2021 Space4Youth Competition launched!

UNOOSA, in collaboration with SGAC, has just launched the 2021 Space4Youth Competition https://unoosa.org/oosa/ourwork/space4youth/competition/2021/!

We want to hear from you how space science,?technology and its applications can foster actions and commitments for climate mitigation and adaptation policies.

Prize: three winners will be awarded with a trip to the United States to attend a Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Centre. They will also attend meetings organized by the UK Space Agency to discuss their essays with experts!

The Competition is open until 26 April 2021. Please find the call for essays here .

The competition is open to students and young professionals.

The formation of ionospheric physics -
confluence of traditions and threads of continuity

This paper examines how ionospheric physics emerged as a research speciality in Britain, Germany, and the United States in the first four decades of the 20th century. It argues that the formation of this discipline can be viewed as the confluence of four deep-rooted traditions in which scientists and engineers transformed, from within, research areas connected to radio wave propagation and geomagnetism. These traditions include Cambridge school’s mathematical physics, Goöttingen’s mathematical physics, laboratory-based experimental physics, and Humboldtian-style terrestrial physics. Although focused on ionospheric physics, the paper pursues the idea that a dynamic conception of scientific tradition will provide a new perspective for the study of geoscience history.
