IHY-ISWI Regional Meeting
Heliophysical phenomena and Earth's environment
7-13 September 2009, Šibenik, Croatia

A Balkan - Black Sea - Caspian Sea Regional Network for Space Weather Studies was established to coordinate the activities of the participating countries in the program of IHY and beyond, and to foster the collaboration among the scientists in the region.

The International Heliophysical Year was officially closed on 18 April 2009 at a ceremony in the UN premises in Vienna. On the same day, a new UN supported program - the International Space Weather Initiative (ISWI) for years 2010-2012 - was adopted as an UN supported program during the session of the Science and Technical Subcommittee of the UN Committee of Peaceful Use of the Outer Space (COPUOS).

Dear colleagues,

as you remember, during Sozopol IHY Meeting we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which aimed to start and then strengthen our activities towards creating Regional Network on space weather studies (Black Sea and Caspian Sea Regional Network on Space Weather Studies) and collaboration alongside with participation in regional projects. One of the main goals/wishes was establishing new periodical scientific journal in the field of solar-terrestrial physics. We already decided and now we have our “SUN and GEOPSPHERE”! But it is only a name

In our opinion, in order to have a serious journal, we have to have:

  1. best articles;
  2. hard editing;
  3. nicely designed cover and other technical pages.

Now we are busy with collecting articles to be included in the 1-st issue which is intended to replace the Proceedings of Sozopol IHY Meeting. But it is also time for design works.

That is why we would like to ask you, our adherents to think and to give ideas or to create and send us (it is something like a competition!):

  1. Logo of our Regional Network
  2. Front cover of our Journal which should satisfy the thematic the Sun and geosphere. After collecting all of variants we can choose through voting most suitable one. Author will have copyright and will be mentioned in the inside cover permanently.
  3. Possible candidates for Editorial Board, balancing member country, and subjects to be covered (Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Space Weather, Solar physics, Geophysics, Solar wind and Magneto sphere, Ionosphere, etc.)

Deadline: 30 November 2005.

Dear friends,

We have many good news, and one reminder.

First of all, I am happy to inform you that our regional network has one new member. We welcome Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its young Solar physics group. The national coordinator is Dr. Alexandra Andic from the University in Banja Luka (contact details on the web-page).

The next paper of our popular series is already online - it is about solar rotation. You can put it online on your local web-pages, translate it and submit it to local periodicals as we decided. Thanks to Dragan Rosa and Darie Maricic!

Our Turkish colleagues are arranging to organize our next regional meeting in Turkey right after the eclipse in the end of March 2006. Please clear your calendars. Thanks to Atila Ozguc and Tamer Ozalp!

Elchin Babayev presented the IHY program to the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, and they approved our 2007 meeting to be held in Azerbaijan.

Elchin is now working on the ISSN number of our new journal - "Sun and geosphere". But in order to get it, the journal must have a cover page, so please think about ideas. This may be a sort of a competition which is a good opportunity to popularize the IHY and the journal. And the journal needs an editorial board, so we are waiting for your proposals (and do not forget yourselves!). You can see the details on our web-page.

Finally, the reminder. I hope you have not forgotten that the proceedings of our regional meeting will first appear as an online publication. Already there are a few papers submitted, the others please don't postpone this. Let us try to be ready if not by the end of October, then at least about the middle of November
