DKIST Critical Science Plan Workshop 5:
Wave generation and propagation
April 9÷11, 2018, Newcastle upon Thyne, UK

web-address http://eclipse2017.nso.edu/science/dkist/dkist-critical-science-plan/workshop-5/

The National Solar Observatory is currently supporting a number of Critical Science Plan Development workshops, whose main purpose is to advance the DKIST Critical Science Plan (CSP) in preparation for start of DKIST operations. Each CSP Development Workshops is expected to advance Science Use Case (SUC) development by the user community by focusing on a particular research area.

Workshop 5 will focus on the science of, “Wave generation and propagation”. Workshop 5 will consist of two 3-day meetings. The first will be held in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK from 9÷11 April 2018 and will involve several US and DKIST scientists, together with a large number of UK scientist (including students) possessing a variety of observational, numerical and theoretical expertise in wave processes in the solar atmosphere. The UK community is much excited and eagerly anticipating DKIST: during this meeting DKIST capabilities will be discussed and demonstrated, and main topics will be discussed, laying down the groundwork for many SUCs. The second workshop will be held at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces from 6÷8 Dec. 2018.

The transport of mass and energy through the solar chromosphere and into the corona remains one of the most challenging problems in solar physics. Understanding the origins of wave energy generation, mode conversion and dissipation requires observations with extremely high spatial resolution and high temporal cadence, such as those provided by DKIST. Our workshops will target several key science themes, including the chromosphere-corona connection; spicule physics formation; coronal waves and energy fluxes; etc. We will prepare at least a few SUCs per science theme, with a view to answering questions concerning the nature and the impact of wave processes within each of the topics.

We welcome interest from the community to those would like to participate in the second workshop at NMSU from 6÷8 Dec 2018.
