Description

The equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere is a key region in the space around the Earth for safe and reliable use of space by human beings, such as navigation by GNSS satellites and satellite-ground communications. This region has a highest plasma density around the earth, and is highly disturbed by plasma turbulence and irregularity as well as electric currents. This region is also strongly affected by the solar radiation and solar wind. The Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) under ICSU has started 5-year program VarSITI (Variability of the sun and its terrestrial impact, 2014-2018) to understand the solar variability and its impact on earth. With increasing interest on these ionospheric dynamics, this international school on the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere, is aimed at capacity building of young researchers and graduate-course students in this field in Nigeria and neighboring countries in Africa. The School targets Masters students, PhD candidates, fresh postdoc researchers in fields of relevance to Atmospheric Physics and Space Weather. Good final year Bachelor degree students can also apply for the Workshop.

Tentative list of the topics to be handled at the School are: Sun-earth connection, Dynamic variation of the ionosphere, Relation of the ionosphere to the human activity in space, GNSS applications, Electric currents in the ionosphere, Hands-on training on ionospheric data processing, Peculiarities of the equatorial ionosphere, Space weather impact on satellite technology

Application for participation

Participation shall be by invitation to successful candidates. Applications are invited from graduate students and fresh postdocs with research interest in Atmospheric Science. Participants must have a good working knowledge of English, which will be the only language of the Workshop. Invited participants will be expected to prepare a poster for presentation during the Workshop. Interested participants should complete the application form.

Registration for the Workshop

There shall be no registration fee for the School. Very limited support is available to selected candidate and this may cover travel, lodging or feeding.
